A large French two inch diameter & 1/8" thick Bronze Medal. The medal is untitled but on the graphics at reverse is the traditional Medical Emblem of Serpents entwined on a Staff with Wings at top.The Sculptor is J.P. Legastelois (Paris 1855-1931). Doctors' symbol: A staff or rod with a snake curled around it. This is the Rod of Aesculapius (also called Asklepios), the ancient mythical god of medicine. ... The caduceus is usually depicted with two snakes and a pair of wings and is often used mistakenly as a symbol of medicine.
