A.US.N. Liner 'Wyandra' Vintage Postcard 1911
The Queensland Steam Shipping Co (QSS) was formed in 1881. Registered in London by the combine of British India Steam Navigation Co., Charles Parbury, James Burns (later of Burns Philp & Co) and McIlwraith McEacharn What started as an Incentive from the then Queensland Premier for a satisfactory tender for the State's Mail contract led to the creation of this entity. A fierce rate war ensued with the Australasian Steam Navigation Co., who otherwise enjoyed a monopoly on the East coast shipping trade. ASN Co then made an offer in 1886 to sell their fleet but not their land based holdings to QSS Co. In 1887 the QSS found agreement with the ASN and the two fleets combined under the new name of the Australasian United Steam Navigation Co (AUSN) The Company existed into the 1960's. The Wyandra was a 4,058 gross tons Passenger vessel built by A Stephen & Sons of Glasgow. She was sold in1925 to Japanese shipbreakers and demolition began 9th February 1926. A nice colour postcard....crease one corner and some general marking but in good overall condition for age. Postally used and dated November 1911.
